THE PAPER COMPANY

Vector digital art

59,4x84,1 cm

2018

An experimental attempt in creating a logo for a company specialized in the selling of paper and other writing products. It was developed exclusively through Illustrator.

INTRODUCTION

This is the third piece I created for the last weekly commission centered around the creation of a logo for The Paper Company. For this particular design, I wanted to create a logo solely involving the use of geometric text.

EARLY CONCEPT

The first concept I had created for this piece used traditional lettering, merging together the initials of "The Paper Company"  to form the main logo's shape. However, soon after having begun, I discarded the use of modern typeface, as I thought it looked too anonymous and unimaginative.

STYLISTIC CHOICES

So I started researching a variety of exotic and foreign-looking alphabets that would share similarities with the modern western alphabet, while still having unique particularities that would differentiate the lettering of the logo from similar designs. In the end, I found that the most viable option was the use of the runic alphabet, as its lettering was still understandable even for those with no knowledge of the runic designs and meanings. After having selected the runes, I proceeded to try out different ways to merge the three together in a way that they all became a single geometric shape.

FINAL ENHANCEMENTS

After having found a correct match, I finalized the visual aspect of the logo by adding a black outline to further highlight the main shape and selected colors which made it immediately eyecatching and able to fit a variety of formats. Finally, being a logo for The Paper Company, I wanted to include the name within the logo itself. I did this by inserting the name inside the runes, with each word being placed in the letter with which it began.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this was, without a doubt, the most challenging and yet most rewarding of the four works, mainly due to my inexperience in using text as a mark. However, this project made me gain some more confidence with the tool, and it made me want to experiment further with more peculiar ways to use lettering.
