Digital Animation

27 Seconds

2018

A brief animation project, which presents and critiques the business of whaling, and exposes its effects on the environment. This is all executed mainly through contrasting imagery of a whale being killed and ripped apart for monetary value, and a voice overexposing the power and danger of Moby Dick, the white whale.

INTRODUCTION

This was a brief animation experiment I created for the Whaling research for Unit 3 of the First Year's Graphic design course at UAL. While this work wasn't a requirement, I decided to create an experimental animation with the goal of bringing out the gory reality of the whaling industry through an almost childish animated style.

STORY AND PROCESS OF THE ANIMATION

For the animation's story, I wanted to present a simplified version of the Whaling process, including the creation of the products made from the hunted whales. For the technique, I decided to create a digital hand-drawn animation, as it would have allowed me to have additional control of the coloring and the lighting of the video. However, one downside of creating an animation with this technique is that it takes a great amount of time as each frame is drawn and colored from scratch.

SOUND SELECTION AND ENHANCEMENT

After having terminated the enhancing of the base animation, I proceeded with selecting an appropriate soundtrack to accompany the story of this white whale. After brief research, I decided that instead of using a song for accompanying the story, I would have instead used a monologue of captain Achab from the 1956 movie "Moby Dick". I made this stylistic decision because I liked how the speech makes the whale, which in some way resembles Moby Dick, appear as a menace, when instead it's shown in the animation that the whale is the victim of the whaling industry.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, while this was intended to be an experimental short movie, I feel that I effectively deliver the critique on whaling I was aiming for, mainly by presenting it as an exaggeratingly bloody and unnecessarily violent business that should have been abandoned a long time ago.
