Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

PROBLEM

The heating infrastructure in the UK is a major source for pollution, as many of the properties in the country are old, and lack either updated insulation, or more eco-sustainable heating. This has a major impact on the the Net-zero goal that the government is pushing to achieve by 2050.

GOAL

To support the decarbonization of heat in buildings and provide upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales.

When I first joined the team, the project was about to be released in the live beta phase of its lifetime, with the foundations of the service ready for release. My role as a senior service designer was to improve the ground work that had been laid by the previous design team, as well as develop new functionalities and components which would increase the accessibility and functionality of the scheme. I was meant to target both our external users (installers and property owners) as well as our internal users (PO team, supervising Ofgem team). Another reapplication function, meant to allow the installer to save time, by pulling and updating any info from a previous application. Some examples of components I worked on for this scheme include the external file upload user journey and function, to allow installers to upload any necessary evidence for a specific application case. Another component was the reapplication function, meant to allow the installer to save time, by pulling and updating any info from a previous application. For the internal side, I worked on functionalities that allowed the supervising team to keep track of communication with the external users through email functions, the ability to add notes and unique points to applications and vouchers as needed, and I worked on laying the groundwork for the implementation of One Gov Login, meant to improve the accessibility for both parties. This was one of the most impactful and important projects I have worked on during my professional time as a designer, as I was not only able to expand my knowledge of the energy sector and its wider impact. I was also able to further expand my technical design and prototyping skills with tools such as HTML and Figma, allowing me to have additional options for the development of future projects.
